  This  is the quick update board for University of Delaware journalism internships.  Sometimes internship offers come in and we want to get them out to students as soon as possible.    We will continue to use the main board for upcoming events and ongoing offers.

  Summer and Fall INTERNSHIPS

 

1. The Cecil Whig
     Minimum experience: One semester at The Review

     Details:  Interns write stories for a variety of desks, including breaking news, features and sports. Copy editing interns also encouraged.  Previous UD interns are Ryan Marshall and Matt Bittle.

2. Main Line Today     
   
Location: West Chester, Pa.

   Details: Recent UD alum Emily Riley is now an editor here. The last intern worked with her on a large consumer package as well as entertainment articles and local interest pieces.

3.  Newark Post

      Location:  You will actually be working out of the Cecil Whig, with former Review editor - now Newark Post editor Josh Shannon.

     Details:  Interns work for the city, sports, business, education or features desk. They write deadline stories, often landing on the front page. Editors prefer at least one semester on The Review with a strong number of clips.  Make sure you check out the website.  Past interns included Rose O'Neill and Nicole Romeo.  

     Summer deadline:  April 1

      Fall deadline: August 1

4. The News Journal

     Location: Wilmington

     Details:  Interns work for the city, sports, business, education or features desk. They write deadline stories, often landing on the front page. Editors prefer at least one semester on The Review with a strong number of clips.  

     Students must have a car.

     Deadline Summer: March 15

     Fall deadline: May 15

      Gear your cover letter and clips to the desk you're interested in covering: features, business, city, education, or sports.

5. The Philadelphia Inquirer

     Location:  Philadelphia

     Details:  Students work on various desks across the newsroom and in the suburbs.  It's an intense internship involving a lot of breaking news and some features. Students are expected to pitch their own ideas eventually.   A previous internship is suggested.

6. Baltimore City Paper 

     Location: Baltimore

     Details:  Interns write briefs, reviews and longer feature articles in an alternative newspaper format.  It's a casual atmosphere with lots of opportunity.

    Location: Newark

    Details:  Write briefs, edit copy and help with feature and entertainment stories. Students are encouraged to pitch their own story ideas.

8. Philadelphia Magazine

    Location:  Philadelphia

     Details:  Write briefs, edit copy and help with online writing and reporting at Philadelphia Magazine. We have several students who have interned there with great reviews (check in with nekelly89@gmail.com, former Review editor and now Philly Mag editorial assistant or Alex Leshner, who interned there last summer)

10.  Advance Magazine 

  Location: King of Prussia

   Details:  This magazine is looking for an intern to do feature reporting and writing for print and the web, as well as planning and assembling an e-newsletter and helping analyze their website.  12-15 hours a week, at $8-$9 an hour. 
   Minimum Experience: While we prefer to see articles that appeared in print or on a website, we will accept papers written for a class (be sure to explain what your assignment was).

11. Philadelphia City Paper

     Location:  Philadelphia

     Details:   This internship requires a familiarity with the Philadelphia area and an interest in contemporary arts and culture. Primary responsibilities include keeping up with weekly beats for our listings database and writing weekly entertainment-oriented pieces for our paper and A&E blog. Interns typically put in anywhere from 10 to 20 hours per week (scheduling is flexible).

 JOURNALISM AWARDS:

 

 

     1.  Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association Scholarship - $1,000 

         Deadline:  Due to Prof. Fallik on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 5 p.m. (302 Memorial Hall)

         Requirements Applicants must be fulltime students who have completed at least two semesters of college work with a GPA of at least 3.0, and must be a resident of MarylandDelaware, or the District of Columbia. Preference given to applicants who can demonstrate financial need.

          Application:  Please EMAIL  Prof. Fallik  (dfallik@udel.edu)  Resume, three of your best clips, and a cover letter  that sets forth your qualifications, especially in journalism; states your current overall grade point average and your home state; and indicates your financial need.

 

     2.  Ross Mayhew Memorial Scholarship - $3,000 

         Deadline:   Due to Prof. Fallik on Tuesday, April 23 at 5 p.m. (302 Memorial Hall)

         Requirements:  This scholarship honors Ross Mayhew, who died in 1986 while he was editor in chief at The Review. The donors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mayhew.  

          Details:   Applicants must be full-time students who are entering their senior year; who can demonstrate excellence in journalism and general scholarship; and who can demonstrate financial need.

          Application:   Please EMAIL Prof. Fallik  (dfallik@udel.edu)  your resume, three of your best clips, and a cover letter that sets forth your qualifications; states your current overall grade point average and your home state; and demonstrates financial need through the filing of a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Application.

 

  3. Lindsey Marie Bonistall Memorial Award - $2,000-$3,000

      Deadline:  Email to Prof. Dawn Fallik at 302 Memorial Hall by Tuesday, April 23 at 5 p.m

      Details: This scholarship honors Lindsey Bonistall, who was an English/Journalism major at the university from 2003 until her death in 2005, and who was recognized for her personal energy, enthusiasm and humor and for her kindness to the community of students of which she was so proud to be a part.

     Eligibility: Applicants must be rising senior students of journalism. Please email Prof. Fallik (dfallik@udel.edu) put together a package including a resume, three of your best clips, and a cover letter (addressed “To the Journalism Faculty”) that sets forth your qualifications.  

 

   4. C.A. Tilghman Sr. Journalistic Awards

      Cash prizes for the two best articles or series of articles, in any genre (news, features, enterprise) published in The Review during the academic year. Double-bylined articles may be submitted.

       Deadline: Last Thursday in April at 5 p.,m. 

      Application:  Put application under Prof. Fallik's door at 302 Memorial or send through university or U.S. mail to her at English Department, University of DelawareNewark DE 19716. Applications should include the article(s) and a short cover letter explaining any special circumstances surrounding the story (a tight deadline, difficult sources, resourcefulness in reporting) and its significance, including any changes or results the article brought about.

      

      5. Dennis Jackson Summer Internship Stipend

       Deadline: TBA - usually first week in May as summer plans are set.  

Stipend awarded to student(s) with unpaid summer journalism internships. Application should include a letter from the internship superviser (preferably on company letterhead) describing your hours and duties, and a letter from the student listing his or her year of graduation, GPA, and previous internships, and explaining any other relevant information or details.   

      Application should go to Prof. Dawn Fallik. Put application under her door at 302 Memoria. 

 

Specialty Summer Internship Stipends

 

    1.  Bill Fleischman Internship - $1,000.  This internship goes to a student who received a sports or copy editing internship in honor of retired Professor Fleischman. Open.

 

    2.  Memorial Scholarship  - $1,000.   This internship is in memory of a UD alum. It can be used for a Delaware news outlet or by an in-state student. Open.

 

     3.  Ellen Cannon Scholarship - $1,000.  This internship funds a summer business writing internship at the News-Journal internship.   It has already been awarded for summer 2013.
